Temporarily disabled workers should notify their employers promptly following their injury. Once you have missed one day of work your employer must notify the state workers’ compensation bureau. Temporary total disability benefits begin on the eighth day after injury, and on the 14th day after your injury you receive retroactive payment for your first seven days. Medical costs are also covered by workers’ compensation, as well as payments for specific losses such as body parts, hearing or sight.

There are two types of temporary disability: temporary total disability and temporary partial disability. If you are receiving temporary total disability payments, you can be required to undergo a medical evaluation after 104 weeks to determine if you are still 50% disabled from your work injury, based on American Medical Association standards. If you no longer are more than 50% disabled, you are deemed to be partially disabled. If a physician subsequently certifies that you are more than 50% disabled, you can petition to have your total disability status reinstated. While partially disabled, you can be offered a lower-paying job that fits your work restrictions, and your workers’ compensation expires after 500 weeks.
