Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, pronounced "school kill", is located in the heart of the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania. The county is bordered by Luzerne County to the north, Carbon County to the northeast, Lehigh County to the southeast, Berks County to the south, Lebanon County to the southwest, Dauphin County to the southwest, Northumberland County to the northwest, and Columbia County also to the northwest.

Named for the Schuylkill River, Schuylkill County was established on March 1, 1811, from parts of Berks and Northampton Counties. The Delaware Indians were the original settlers in the area. Coal became an economically viable factor in Schuylkill County in the mid 1800's. The increased demand for labor in the coal mines, iron foundries, canal barges and railroads brought European settlers to the area. Today, Schuylkill County has made the transition from being economically dependent on Anthracite coal production to an economy based on manufacturing and service industries.
